At EDNA, we believe netball is more than just a game—it’s a community where players, coaches, volunteers, and umpires come together to create something truly special. While we’re passionate about nurturing the development of our players and coaches, we’re equally committed to the growth of our umpires. They are the backbone of every match, ensuring the game is played fairly, efficiently, and with respect for the rules. That’s why this season, we’re thrilled to run a Beginner Umpire Course every Saturday, designed to equip aspiring umpires with the skills and confidence to take the court.
If you’ve been at the courts recently, you’ve likely spotted some new faces in green shirts—these are our umpires in training. These individuals are vital to the future of netball, and they’re learning and growing with every game they officiate. We ask the entire EDNA community—players, coaches, and spectators—to show patience and support as these new umpires gain valuable experience in real match situations.
Our Umpires are Prepared and Ready
It’s important to know that before stepping onto the court, every trainee umpire has completed two online modules (an exam and course) administered by Netball Australia. These modules ensure that our trainee umpires have a solid understanding of netball officiating rules, regulations, and best practices. This preparation gives them the foundational knowledge they need to make fair and accurate decisions during games.
Once they’ve passed these exams, they’re ready to take the next step—practical experience. That’s where our Saturday games come in. Under the guidance of experienced umpires and mentors, these trainees gradually apply what they’ve learned in real-world scenarios, gaining confidence and honing their decision-making skills. Their development on the court is just as important as any player’s, and we’re proud of their progress each week.
It’s important to remember that they are new to this role as they learn and grow, just as players were when they first started. They will make mistakes as part of the learning process, and that’s perfectly normal. We ask for your patience as they improve each week. Imagine if your child was out there learning—how would you want them to be treated? Every umpire deserves respect, and our community’s responsibility is to support them on their journey.
The Dual Role of Player and Umpire
Our trainee umpires are even more impressive because most also play in the competition. This dual role gives them a unique perspective—understanding the game from both a player’s and an umpire’s point of view. Being both a player and an umpire allows them to understand the game's nuances better, the flow of play, and the challenges players face on the court. This deeper insight enables them to officiate with empathy and fairness, creating a better experience for everyone involved.
Why Umpires are Critical to the Game
Without umpires, there is no game. They uphold the integrity of netball, making sure that matches are played according to the rules and in a fair and respectful manner. New umpires are the future of this essential role, and by investing in their development, we’re ensuring that EDNA continues to thrive as a well-organized and professional competition.
Our green-shirted umpires in training are building the skills that will carry them through their umpiring careers. Each whistle they blow and each decision they make brings them closer to becoming experienced umpires. We are proud to be part of their journey and excited to watch them grow into confident, capable officials.
Respect and Encouragement Go a Long Way
Remember, umpiring is a job; like any worker, umpires deserve to be treated with respect. No matter their role, every worker should be respected—and umpires are no exception. They are doing their best to ensure that games run smoothly and fairly, and it’s our job to show appreciation for their efforts, even when they make mistakes.
Think about it this way: how would you feel if your child were learning to umpire? You’d want them to be treated with kindness, patience, and support as they navigate this challenging role. Our umpires in training deserve the same respect and understanding. Let’s lead by example and show them the same grace we would hope for our own children or loved ones.
How You Can Support Our Umpires in Training
As our trainee umpires continue to learn and grow, we encourage everyone in the EDNA community to offer their support. Here’s how you can help:
- Be patient. Mistakes are part of the learning process, and our trainee umpires are working hard to improve. A little patience goes a long way in helping them gain confidence on the court.
- Encourage them. A friendly smile, a kind word, or even a simple “thank you” after the game can make a huge difference. Umpires, especially those just starting, need encouragement to keep improving.
Respect their role. Umpires are responsible for ensuring fair play, and their decisions should be respected. Support their calls and set an example for players and spectators alike to help create a positive atmosphere.
Thank You for Helping Build the Future of Netball!
At EDNA, we’re passionate about more than just the current season—we’re invested in the future of the sport. By supporting our umpires in training, you’re helping to build the next generation of officials who will go on to ensure that netball remains a fair, fun, and competitive sport for years to come.
So, the next time you see a green-shirted umpire on the court, remember that they are on a journey—learning, growing, and gaining confidence with each game they officiate. With your patience and encouragement, they’ll continue to improve and become vital to the netball community. 💚
Let’s keep building a strong, supportive environment where every umpire, player, and coach can thrive. Here’s to a bright future for netball!
